AI Content Fact-Checking Checklist for SEO

AI can create a useful first draft, but it can also produce false facts, outdated advice, invented citations, and confident claims without evidence. NIST calls this problem “confabulation”: AI systems may present erroneous or false information with confidence.

The safest publishing rule is simple: treat every factual statement in an AI draft as unverified until a person checks it against a reliable source.

Use this checklist before publishing or substantially updating AI-assisted SEO content:

  • Identify every verifiable claim.
  • Prioritize claims by risk.
  • Check each important claim against its original source.
  • Confirm dates, names, numbers, quotations, and links.
  • Separate facts from opinions and recommendations.
  • Remove claims that cannot be supported.
  • Review titles, metadata, images, and structured data.
  • Record who checked the article and when.
  • Schedule future reviews for time-sensitive pages.

Fact-checking does not guarantee higher rankings. It does, however, reduce avoidable errors and supports the accurate, helpful, trustworthy content described in Google’s guidance for AI-generated content.

1. Create an inventory of factual claims

Start by marking every statement that a reader could verify or dispute. Do not limit the review to obvious statistics.

Check claims involving:

  • Numbers, percentages, prices, and measurements
  • Dates, timelines, and historical events
  • Names, job titles, credentials, and organizations
  • Product features, limits, and compatibility
  • Laws, regulations, standards, and official policies
  • Scientific, medical, financial, or safety information
  • Survey findings and research conclusions
  • Rankings, market positions, and popularity claims
  • Direct quotations and attributed opinions
  • SEO features, documentation, and search-engine behavior

Also flag words such as always, never, best, proven, guaranteed, and everyone. These terms often turn a limited observation into an unsupported universal claim.

2. Check high-risk claims first

Not every error has the same consequences. Prioritize claims that could affect a reader’s health, finances, safety, legal position, or major purchasing decision.

A useful risk order is:

  1. Medical, legal, financial, civic, and safety claims
  2. Product prices, specifications, and availability
  3. Statistics, research findings, and quotations
  4. Search policies and other frequently changing guidance
  5. Background details with limited practical impact

For high-stakes subjects, an AI draft should not be the final authority. Use current primary sources and involve a qualified subject-matter reviewer where appropriate.

Google says its systems place greater emphasis on signals of reliability for topics that can significantly affect health, financial stability, safety, or society. Google describes these as “Your Money or Your Life” topics in its people-first content guidance. This is guidance about content quality, not a claim that a particular editorial checklist is a direct ranking factor.

3. Trace claims to primary sources

A source is not strong merely because it appears near the top of a search result or looks professional. Whenever possible, follow a claim back to the organization or person responsible for the underlying information.

Prefer:

  • Government agencies for laws, official statistics, and public guidance
  • Academic papers for research findings
  • Standards organizations for technical specifications
  • Company documentation for product features and policies
  • Court opinions or legislation for legal developments
  • Original interviews or transcripts for quotations
  • Search-engine documentation for SEO policies and features

Use secondary reporting when it contributes context, explains disagreement, or points to the primary evidence. Avoid using an article that cites another article that summarizes a study you have not read.

For each source, ask:

  • Does it directly support the exact claim?
  • Is it the original source?
  • Who published it, and what relevant expertise do they have?
  • When was it published or updated?
  • Does it define the population, method, and limitations?
  • Is there a correction or newer version?
  • Could the publisher have a commercial interest in the conclusion?

4. Verify that citations actually support the surrounding text

AI tools may provide a real link that does not support the claim, combine findings from different sources, or invent a plausible-looking title or URL.

Open every important citation and compare it with the sentence it supports. Check that:

  • The page exists and is accessible.
  • The author or organization is correctly named.
  • The title and publication date are accurate.
  • The cited passage supports the claim without changing its meaning.
  • The source refers to the same country, period, product version, or population.
  • The article is not citing a retracted or superseded study.
  • The link points to the evidence, not a search-results page or unrelated homepage.

Do not cite a source for a broader conclusion than its evidence allows. For example, a survey of 300 customers from one company cannot establish what all consumers believe.

5. Recalculate numbers and preserve context

Numbers often become misleading when AI removes their definitions or timeframes.

Verify:

  • The numerator and denominator
  • Units and currencies
  • Geographic scope
  • Study or reporting period
  • Sample size
  • Percentage versus percentage-point changes
  • Mean versus median
  • Nominal versus inflation-adjusted values
  • Correlation versus causation
  • Whether totals have been rounded

If a draft says conversions rose from 2% to 3%, that is an increase of one percentage point and a relative increase of 50%. Both descriptions may be mathematically correct, but they communicate different things.

Retain meaningful limitations from the source. A concise qualification such as “in a survey of existing customers” may be necessary for accuracy.

6. Confirm quotations word for word

Never publish a quotation based only on an AI response. Find the original document, transcript, recording, or official statement.

Then confirm:

  • The exact wording
  • The speaker
  • The date
  • The surrounding context
  • Any omissions indicated by ellipses
  • Whether the quotation has been translated
  • Whether the speaker was quoting someone else

If the original wording cannot be found, paraphrase only what reliable evidence supports. Do not keep quotation marks around an approximate reconstruction.

7. Check freshness-sensitive SEO statements

Search features, documentation, spam policies, and supported structured-data types can change. Verify these claims close to publication and record the review date.

For example, Google currently says that using generative AI is not inherently against its guidelines. The relevant concern is whether content is useful and compliant with Search Essentials and spam policies. Generating many pages primarily to manipulate rankings without adding value can qualify as scaled content abuse.

That distinction matters. “Google bans AI content” is inaccurate. “Google may take action against scaled, low-value content created to manipulate rankings, regardless of how it was produced” reflects the documented policy more closely.

Avoid presenting E-E-A-T as a single score or direct ranking factor. Google explicitly says E-E-A-T is not itself a specific ranking factor, although its systems use various factors that can identify qualities associated with experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trust. 8. Separate evidence from analysis

A trustworthy article makes it clear which statements come from documented evidence and which are editorial judgments.

Use language such as:

  • “Google’s documentation states…” for a documented fact.
  • “This suggests…” for an inference.
  • “A practical editorial approach is…” for a recommendation.
  • “In this hypothetical example…” for an invented scenario.
  • “Evidence is limited…” when the available research is inconclusive.

Do not turn recommendations into facts. A checklist may improve editorial consistency, but without supporting evidence it should not be described as a proven way to increase rankings, traffic, or conversions.

9. Verify first-hand claims and authorship signals

AI must not invent experience. Remove or rewrite claims such as:

  • “We tested 20 tools” when no documented test occurred.
  • “Our customers achieved…” without verified records and permission.
  • “I have used this process for years” when the named author has not.
  • “Experts agree” without identifying relevant experts and evidence.

Add an accurate byline when readers would reasonably want to know who wrote or reviewed the content. Google recommends considering clear authorship information and explaining how content was produced when that context would be useful.

If a human performed original testing, describe the method, date, conditions, sample, and limitations. This type of documented experience can add value that a generic AI summary cannot. 10. Review commercial claims and disclosures

Fact-check product recommendations with extra care. Confirm current prices, plan names, availability, specifications, and the conditions attached to promotional claims.

Material relationships should also be disclosed clearly. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission says affiliate and other material connections may require clear and conspicuous disclosure; vague wording such as “commissionable link” may not be sufficient. A disclosure does not make a false claim acceptable. Sponsored statements and affiliate recommendations still need accurate evidence.

11. Audit the entire search snippet and page

Errors can appear outside the main article. Review:

  • SEO title
  • Meta description
  • URL slug
  • Image captions
  • Alt text
  • Tables and charts
  • Author information
  • Publication and modification dates
  • Open Graph fields
  • Article structured data
  • FAQ or product markup
  • Internal-link anchor text

Metadata should not promise information the page does not provide. Structured data must represent visible page content accurately. Google’s structured data guidelines require up-to-date, relevant information and warn against misleading markup.

Use a visible “last updated” date only when the page received a meaningful review or revision. Google recommends keeping visible dates consistent with datePublished and dateModified values in structured data in its byline-date guidance.

12. Perform a final independent review

The person who prompted or edited the AI draft may overlook the same errors more than once. For important pages, have a second person review the evidence without relying on the draft’s conclusions.

The final reviewer should be able to answer:

  • Does every material claim have adequate support?
  • Are sources primary, current, and independent where possible?
  • Are citations placed beside the claims they support?
  • Have all quotations, calculations, and proper names been checked?
  • Are uncertainty and limitations visible?
  • Are commercial relationships disclosed?
  • Does the article answer the searcher’s task without exaggeration?
  • Do metadata and structured data match the page?
  • Is there a named owner for future updates?

Record the reviewer, review date, source URLs, and unresolved issues in the editorial system. This creates an audit trail and makes later updates easier.

A compact pre-publication checklist

Before publishing, confirm that:

  • Every factual claim has been identified.
  • High-risk claims received deeper review.
  • Important claims were checked against primary sources.
  • Every citation opens and supports the adjacent statement.
  • Statistics retain their units, dates, scope, and limitations.
  • Quotations match the original source.
  • Names, titles, products, prices, and dates are current.
  • SEO claims match current official documentation.
  • Facts, interpretations, and recommendations are clearly separated.
  • No first-hand experience, test, or testimonial was invented.
  • Affiliate, sponsorship, or other material relationships are disclosed.
  • The title, metadata, images, and structured data are accurate.
  • Unsupported claims were removed or clearly qualified.
  • A human reviewer approved the final page.
  • Time-sensitive content has a future review date.
